Dahlia Dinnerplate ‘Emory Paul’ is a striking dinnerplate dahlia celebrated for its enormous, perfectly formed blooms and intense, rich coloration. Each flower opens to reveal a fully double, symmetrical form with layers of broad, slightly pointed petals that radiate outward in a flawless, circular pattern. The color is a deep, velvety scarlet-red with hints of burgundy at the base of the petals, giving the blooms a dramatic and luxurious appearance. Flowers can reach 8–12 inches across, creating an impressive, bold presence in the garden or as a cut flower. The long, strong stems support the large blooms, making ‘Emory Paul’ highly suitable for floral arrangements, display gardens, and exhibition purposes.

Foliage is lush, dark green, and sturdy, providing a strong backdrop that highlights the vivid red blooms. The plants are vigorous and upright, producing a steady succession of large flowers from midsummer until the first frost. In the garden, ‘Emory Paul’ adds elegance and drama, serving as a focal point in borders, beds, or mixed plantings. Its combination of size, color intensity, and structural form makes it a favorite among both gardeners and florists.

Planting Directions

  • When to Plant: Plant tubers in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

  • Sun Exposure: Select a site with full sun, receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil. Enrich heavy or poor soils with compost or organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.

  • Planting Depth: Dig a hole 4–6 inches deep. Place the tuber horizontally with the eye or growing point facing upward.

  • Spacing: Space plants 24–36 inches apart to accommodate the large mature size and ensure good airflow.

  • Watering: Water lightly after planting. Once shoots appear, water deeply and regularly, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Staking: Strong stakes or supports are essential at planting time to support the weight of the large blooms and prevent wind damage.

  • Pinching: When plants reach 12–16 inches tall, pinch the main growing tip to encourage branching and increased flower production.

  • Fertilizing: Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season to promote flower development rather than excessive foliage.

  • Bloom Period: Flowers appear from midsummer and continue until the first frost.

  • Overwintering: In colder regions, dig tubers after frost blackens the foliage, allow them to dry, and store in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring.
