Planting Directions
-
When to Plant: Plant tubers in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
-
Sun Exposure: Select a site with full sun, receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
-
Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil. Enrich heavy or poor soils with compost or organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.
-
Planting Depth: Dig a hole 4–6 inches deep. Place the tuber horizontally with the eye or growing point facing upward.
-
Spacing: Space plants 24–36 inches apart to accommodate the large mature size and ensure good airflow.
-
Watering: Water lightly after planting. Once shoots appear, water deeply and regularly, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Staking: Strong stakes or supports are essential at planting time to support the weight of the large blooms and prevent wind damage.
-
Pinching: When plants reach 12–16 inches tall, pinch the main growing tip to encourage branching and increased flower production.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season to promote flower development rather than excessive foliage.
-
Bloom Period: Flowers appear from midsummer and continue until the first frost.
-
Overwintering: In colder regions, dig tubers after frost blackens the foliage, allow them to dry, and store in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring.
