Dahlia 'Brackenridge Ballerina' evokes the image of a dancer captured mid-performance, its form layered and expressive like a swirling skirt in motion. Its petals unfurl in soft, rounded tiers, blending creamy whites, blush pinks, and hints of lavender that seem to shift with the light. Each bloom feels full yet delicate, as though it were suspended in a moment of poised movement. The structure is symmetrical but not rigid, giving it a natural grace that mirrors the fluidity of ballet. There’s a romantic, almost dreamlike quality to it—elegant without being showy—making it feel less like a simple flower and more like a living composition of color, texture, and gentle motion.

Planting Directions

  • When to Plant: Plant tubers in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

  • Sun Exposure: Select a site with full sun, receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil. Enrich heavy or poor soils with compost or organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.

  • Planting Depth: Dig a hole 4–6 inches deep. Place the tuber horizontally with the eye or growing point facing upward.

  • Spacing: Space plants 24–36 inches apart to accommodate the large mature size and ensure good airflow.

  • Watering: Water lightly after planting. Once shoots appear, water deeply and regularly, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Staking: Strong stakes or supports are essential at planting time to support the weight of the large blooms and prevent wind damage.

  • Pinching: When plants reach 12–16 inches tall, pinch the main growing tip to encourage branching and increased flower production.

  • Fertilizing: Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season to promote flower development rather than excessive foliage.

  • Bloom Period: Flowers appear from midsummer and continue until the first frost.

  • Overwintering: In colder regions, dig tubers after frost blackens the foliage, allow them to dry, and store in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring.
